This was supposed to be a music blog…
This was supposed to be a music blog.
Before I got pregnant I was thinking of starting an Ottawa music blog. Pre-kid we pretty much lived for live shows, band t-shirts and Pitchfork reviews. Life was an endless rotation of alcohol, food and music consumption, with a few good movies thrown in when we needed a break.
But the music blog idea never did come to fruition.
The idea did come back while I was on maternity leave but I didn’t know where to start. I was no longer downloading from eMusic or hanging out in clubs. I was changing diapers, doing laundry, cleaning up puke and trying to get some sleep. The music was still on, but the songs on repeat in my head were the ones I picked up at baby playgroups.
Maybe when she’s older, I thought.
Then, about a year ago, I accepted that I was never going to write an Ottawa music blog. I still love music and we still occasionally go to shows and festivals, but there’s other stuff going on now.
As the little one got older, I started to feel like I was doing okay at this mom thing. As she became mobile, talkative and more of a little person, I became more passionate about raising a family downtown. I got good at finding local resources, activities and information online. I started to really miss writing.
And I started to feel like maybe I had a lot to say about raising kids in the city.
So on August 12, 2012, I launched Pub Patio Playdate with this inaugural post.
Doing so was like fitting another piece into my life puzzle. This blog has given me confidence, creativity, balance and a project that’s my own. Through this project I’ve learned new things, met some amazing people and wrote some stuff I’m really proud of. The positive response has been overwhelming and motivating.
I love working on PPP and wish I had more time for it.
So today, two days shy of six months later, let me take a moment to say a big thank you to my friends and family for their support; to my partner, who has endured my seemingly endless stream of blog-related thoughts and my takeover of his computer; and to my kid who inspires most of the content. And of course, thanks to everyone who has ever read, contributed to or commented on my little piece of the internet.
I have so many ideas and some big plans for PPP so please keep reading.
On a related note…The other day the little one hit an important developmental milestone…She asked me to crank up the Junior Boys in the car.
Maybe this wasn’t supposed to be a music blog, but it can certainly start having some music content!
Stay tuned because this week I’m launching my weekly Tunes for Tuesday feature!
Thanks again!
Karie
P.S. I’m always looking for contributors. Have something to say about parenting, city life or Ottawa? Send me your posts, pictures, videos or ideas at pubpatioplaydate@yahoo.ca. You can also get me on Twitter or Facebook.
